Strategic litigation

BEO will work with partners and allies to address the causes of racial discrimination in the criminal justice and immigration systems through litigation, advocacy, outreach, public education and by creating new systems which give Black communities power to hold institutions to account. Our cases challenge systemic issues, in line with our mission to dismantle systemic racism in the UK.

So far, we have conducted judicial review cases in the following:

  • Windrush: We joined legal proceedings against the then Home Secretary Suella Braverman for refusing to implement all the recommendations from the independent review into the Windrush scandal.
  • University of Chichester: We issued a judicial review claim challenging the University’s decision to suspend a unique African history course as they did not carry out any consultation or an equality impact assessment of their decision.
  • Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime Tagging Ex-Offenders: We issued a judicial review claim that the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime and Ministry of Justice’s tagging programme for ex-offenders is unfairly discriminatory against Black men.
