INTRODUCTION TO GUIDE

Black parents in the UK often face unique challenges when navigating the education system, particularly concerning school exclusions.

Research indicates that Black pupils, especially those of Caribbean heritage, are disproportionately affected by exclusionary practices. The national average suspension rate is 9.3%, while for Black Caribbean children it is 13.5%. The impact of exclusion on children’s attainment and long-term outcomes is deeply concerning. Excluded pupils are twice as likely to leave school without GCSEs in English and Maths and four times more likely to come into contact with the youth justice system (DfE, 2022). The disparity in the higher exclusion rate for Black children highlights the importance of understanding the warning signs and processes involved in exclusions to effectively advocate for your child.

This guide is designed to provide key terms, templates of letters and signpost support services, enabling you to engage confidently with school staff and support your child’s educational journey. By familiarising yourself with the exclusion process and policies, you can better understand your rights and the resources available to your child, ensuring they receive the fair and equitable education they deserve.
