October 2025

Subject Here: Department for Education’s (DfE) recruitment of 6,500 new teachers

Dear [MP’s Name],

I hope this email finds you well.

I am one of your constituents and I want to express that while I welcome the Department for Education’s commitment to recruit 6,500 new teachers, I believe it is important that the recruitment of new teachers also considers the need to recruit and retain more Black teachers into the profession.

I am concerned that the Department for Education may not take proactive steps to ensure this.

As my Member of Parliament; I urge you to write to Bridget Phillipson MP, the Secretary of State for Education, and ask that she –

  • takes proactive steps to increase the number of Black teachers
  • Reform the education system to address systemic racism within the profession.
  • Use positive action to address diversity in teaching by targeting outreach initiatives and creating equitable opportunities for Black teacher candidates.

These measures I believe will help provide equality of opportunity and reflect the diversity of our community in the new teacher cohort.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
